What are you thankful for
A very common alternative, literally 'For what do you give thanks?'. Often used in contexts like holidays.
A shorter, more direct way to ask, meaning 'What do you appreciate/give thanks for?'.
—What are you thankful for this year? —I'm thankful for my family and my friends.
At dinner, grandpa asked: 'Family, what are we giving thanks for today?'
It's good to think about the things we are thankful for. What are you thankful for?
Professor, what are you thankful for? —I'm thankful for my health.
The phrase '¿De qué estás agradecido/a?' is standard and widely understood across Latin America. The formal version for 'usted' is '¿De qué está agradecido/a?' and for 'ustedes' is '¿De qué están agradecidos/as?'.
In Spain, for informal plural 'you all', you will hear the 'vosotros' form: '¿De qué estáis agradecidos?'. The singular 'tú' form is the same as in Latin America.
In regions that use 'vos', the phrase becomes '¿De qué estás agradecido vos?'. The verb conjugation 'estás' is the same for both 'tú' and 'vos' in this case, but the pronoun changes.
Both '¿De qué estás agradecido?' and '¿Por qué das gracias?' are very common. The phrases are especially used during family gatherings or reflective moments.
Using 'ser' instead of 'estar'. The mistake is to say '*¿De qué eres agradecido?*'. Being thankful for something is a state or feeling, so you must use 'estar'. 'Ser agradecido' refers to being a grateful person as a personality trait, not being thankful for a specific thing.
Forgetting gender agreement. The adjective 'agradecido' must match the gender of the person speaking. A woman must say 'Estoy agradecida' (ending in -a), not '*Estoy agradecido*'. The same applies to plural forms ('agradecidos' for a group of men or a mixed group, 'agradecidas' for a group of women).
Confusing the prepositions 'de' and 'por'. While 'estar agradecido por algo' (to be thankful for something) is also correct, asking '¿Por qué estás agradecido?' can sometimes be confused with 'Why are you thankful?'. For A1 learners, asking '¿De qué estás agradecido?' is a clearer way to say 'For what are you thankful?'.
