That depends
Use this to specify what it depends on. It means 'It depends on...'
A short way to say 'It depends on' or 'According to'. Often used when presenting a condition.
A slightly more emphatic version, meaning 'Everything depends'.
Are we going to the beach tomorrow?
Mmm, it depends on the weather.
Is the test difficult?
It depends. For me, yes. For Ana, no.
How much does a good cell phone cost?
Oof, everything depends on the brand you want.
The phrase 'Depende' is a universal standard across the entire Spanish-speaking world, from Mexico to Argentina to Spain. There is virtually no regional variation in the phrase itself.
While the word is the same, it's common in Argentina to accompany 'Depende' with a gesture where the fingertips of one hand are brought together, pointing upwards, and the wrist is rocked back and forth.
'Depende' is the standard term. No significant difference in usage compared to Latin America.
Saying 'Eso depende' instead of just 'Depende'. — While 'Eso depende' (That depends) is grammatically correct, Spanish speakers almost always shorten it to just 'Depende' when used as a standalone answer. It sounds more natural.
Using the wrong preposition: 'Depende en' or 'Depende a'. — The verb 'depender' always uses the preposition 'de'. The correct form is 'depende de algo' (it depends on something). For example, 'Depende del tiempo' (It depends on the weather), not 'Depende en el tiempo'.
Confusing 'depende' with 'colgar'. — In English, 'depend' can mean 'to hang from'. In Spanish, these are two different verbs. 'Depender' is for reliance or conditionality. 'Colgar' is for physically hanging an object, like 'colgar un cuadro' (to hang a painting).
