Apartment
A very common alternative, especially in Mexico, Argentina, and Chile. It means the exact same thing.
This is the most common word for 'apartment' in Spain. While understood in Latin America, it's less common.
I live in a small apartment.
Where is your apartment?
The apartment has a big kitchen.
We are looking for an apartment downtown.
The word 'apartamento' is the most widely used and understood term across most of Latin America, particularly in countries like Colombia and Venezuela.
In these countries, 'departamento' is the preferred and more common term for an apartment.
The standard word is 'piso'. The word 'apartamento' is also used, but it often refers specifically to a smaller, furnished apartment for tourists or short-term stays (like a vacation rental).
Confusing 'apartamento' with 'casa'. Remember that 'casa' means 'house' (a standalone building), while 'apartamento' is a unit inside a larger building.
Forgetting the gender. 'Apartamento' and 'departamento' are masculine nouns. Always use masculine articles and adjectives, like 'un apartamento bonito' (a nice apartment), not 'una apartamento bonita'.
Using the English pronunciation. Be sure to pronounce it with Spanish vowels: ah-par-tah-MEN-toh, not 'uh-part-ment'.
